Extraction Post-Op Care
If these instructions are not followed, the extraction site may not heal properly and the time needed for proper healing will be increased.
- Keep your mouth closed firmly on the gauze for 30-45 minutes. At that time, remove the gauze.
- Do not change the gauze unless instructed to do so by the dentist.
- Do not rinse, spit, or smoke for 24 hours. After 24 hours rinse your mouth gently every 3 to 4 hours (especially after meals) using one quarter teaspoon of salt to a glass of warm water. Continue rinse for several days.
- Do not drink through a straw for 24 hours.
- It would be a good idea not to brush near the extraction site for a day or two.
- When you brush and floss the area, be gentle!
- It is advisable a light diet the first 24 hours after the extraction.
- Some slight swelling in the area is to be expected, especially is the extraction was difficult.
- If sutures are placed, return to have them removed.
- If medication has been prescribed for possible post extraction discomfort, take it as directed.
- If prescription medication has NOT been given, you may take your usual over-the-counter pain reliever, as directed.
Please notify us if:
- There is extended bleeding from the extraction site. Slight bleeding for several hours is normal.
- Anything other than slight swelling occurs.
- Discomfort continues for more than 24 hours, especially if it is not relieved by over-the-counter pain relievers.
